Bring-your-own-Lunch at Santa Rita between games on October 3 (Saturday)

Hi Strykers!
Great effort on Saturday!  We'll get them Twinkies next time!
Coach Rachel had a great idea.  Next Saturday we have some time to kill between games.  She thought we could have a picnic at Santa Rita Park.  I propose a bring-your-own-lunch event.  You could either pack a lunch for your family, or buy Subway (or something nutritious and not too heavy) on the way to the Park.  Please plan to join Coach Rachel and other Strykers for a little down time between games.  We'll need to figure out a back-up plan if the weather is bad (knock on wood).

Have a great week!

(PS I just found out that grandparents are monitoring our web page for information on the Strykers.  It was great to hear that!  You can invite others who want to keep up with our team to check out our website for the latest on our Stryker girls.)

Copa Del Sol Information and Team Assignments Available

The Copa del Sol will be held  Saturday, October 10, at FLC.

For those unfamiliar with Copa, it is a fast-moving 4v4 tournament played with "different" rules.   DYSA's policy for Copa is that this is an event where we don't want "coaches".   The kids play and manage themselves.  One adult "chaperone" is assigned to each team just to make sure things go smoothly, but other than that it is a players event!  Team coaches (Jimmy, Rachel) typically roam amongst their players' Copa teams to show their support.  Chaperones will be identified soon.

Here is a link to more information on the Copa:  http://www.durangosoccer.com/sites/default/files/2008%20Copa%20Rules.pdf

Teams like to get together ahead of time (with help from parents) and design unique, crazy t-shirts.  (You can flip old t-shirts inside-out.)  The coaches for the Blaze and the Strykers will cooperate and talk to the girls together about the Copa, and then run a practice with the 4v4 format prior to the tournament.  The teams will need to come up with names quickly so Steph Ribera can submit this information to DYSA.

If you would like to volunteer to be a chaperone or would like more information on the Copa, please let Steph Ribera know.  She can be reached at steph@ribera.us or 749-9474.  Also, Steph can tell you what the team assignments are....

Strykers In Action, Game One!

Okay, let's try this again....and hope there are pictures this time!

Gaylord Sheppard Stay-to-Play Policy: Important Information to Read!

Dear Strykers,

I have learned that the Gaylord Sheppard this year is a "Stay-to-Play" Tournament.  What this means is that I am not able to negotiate with any hotel to secure accommodations for our team.  All out-of-town teams playing in the tournament MUST go through the Albuquerque Housing Authority to secure a hotel for the team.  There is a pre-determined list of hotels and the Albuquerque Housing Authority will determine which hotel our team will be staying at.  I will submit our preference of hotels (based on price, features and safety/convenience of location) from their list of hotels, but there is no guarantee we will be placed at any of the hotels I request.  The price range generally is between $85-$100/night + tax.

We MUST stay at the hotel we are assigned to or our team can be kicked out of the tournament.  The only exception to this would be if you stay with relatives or friends.

All is not forsaken, however.  There are decent hotels on the list.  And, "It is what it is..."  If we want to play in the Gaylord, we'll follow the policy.

WHAT I NEED FROM YOU:

1) You will need to decide soon if you want a hotel room.

2)  I will need a credit card number to guarantee your room.  I will submit a rooming list, including credit card numbers, via FAX to the AHA.  FAX is the most secure way of the options available to transmit your information (I learned that in a computer security training course!).

3)  Be prepared for me to approach you at the game Saturday, asking for your information.  Better yet, please come see me or call me with your information.

THANKS for your cooperation.  Your timely input is essential.

Questions? Call me at 769-7743.

Best Regards,

The Soccer Hooligan

Let's Eat Pizza After the Game Saturday!

Hey Strykers,
GREAT GAME last Saturday!  Congratulations on the victory.  Everyone played their very best, and it showed.  Let's keep it going this weekend.  And let's celebrate our awesome team by having pizza at J Bo's.  If you can make it, let's go right after Saturday's Twinkies game.  To get to J Bo's, take Florida Road to N. College.  It will be on the west, or left, side of Florida Road.  All families will just pitch in and buy their own.  Going for pizza will give the girls a good chance to get to know each other, hang out and just have some fun.  See you there!!

Informational Item from DYSA....

If you'd like more info on the 5k for Alyssa Shelton, contact me and I'll forward.  The following is a message from Alyssa's step-mom.  Pauline

Dear Friends:
Last week I received a very humbling phone call from one of the team parents of the Durango High School running teams (Cross Country & Track).  The coaches, team and parents had formed a very special benefit 5K run in honor of our sweet girl Alyssa Shelton.
Many of you know she was in an accident that has left her partially paralyzed and has caused her to hang up her running shoes and her love for racing.  To this devoted runner, it has been a devastation to sit on the sidelines.  She fights everyday for full recovery, hours upon end in therapy and medical appointments on top of school full time.  She never gives up, and knows that the hard work will hopefully payoff for her recovery.
I invite you to join us in her honor.  Run, walk, skip, stroll, roller skate......she would love to see us all out there challenging ourselves in what might seem like the impossible!
Please also forward to others in your contact list so we can get the word out to our whole community!

"Whe push comes to shove you taste what your made of.  You might bend, you will break, cause it's all you can take. On your knees you look up, decide you've had enough.  You get mad, you get strong, wipe your hands, shake it off, then you STAND!" - Rascal Flatts, Stand (Alyssa's theme song for her recovery).

Hope to see you there!
