May 8th Club Update

Dear Rio Rapids Durango Players, Families, Friends and Coaches,

I hope this finds each of you in good spirits and coping well with the current unprecedented events. The safety of all our players, coaches, member families, and staff will continue to be the priority of any decisions made by the Rio Rapids Durango Soccer Club (RRDSC). 

Unfortunately, under Colorado’s “Safer at Home” order which extends through May 26th, we have been forced to cancel our on field programming for the spring.   We continue to closely monitor this very fluid situation.  If we can play this summer in a safe and responsible manner, we will make every effort to do so. We are considering many ideas. We plan to emerge from this isolation in a positive manner, so our players can feel some form of normalcy as we get back to daily routines.  In the interim, our Directors are engaged in creating and offering on-line activities for our players to work with the ball for the continued development of individual skills and physical fitness.  Our Board has been working with our Directors to determine the best way forward.  In addition, our Board has been working diligently to ensure that our club will continue to serve the Durango community long into the future.  These issues are currently at the top of our priorities.

  

RRDSC, while a nonprofit, is a business with a fiscal year and operating budget. This budget consists of staff salaries, coaching fees,  office rental, storage rental, facility rental, accounting fees amongst many other operating costs. We have continued to pay our staff as an important part of our continued commitment to our staff and our community. We are driven to make decisions for the benefit of the organization and continued operation of RRDSC. To that end, RRDSC will not provide a partial registration refund for the 2020 spring season.  Instead, we will be offering a registration credit for the 2020/2021 season to help lessen the financial impact of club soccer on our families. 

We would like to share several reasons for this decision:

·       Our budgetary vision did not factor in the effects of a pandemic that would shut down all team activities for our club. Historically, we’ve designed program revenue to cover program expenses, leaving little additional operating revenue to support such disruptions in cash flow. 
·       The Durango Shootout, which was canceled due to the pandemic, is our largest club fundraiser.  The proceeds from this event substantially subsidize many of our operations.  This revenue was lost. 
·       Certain portions of operating costs, such as staff salaries are paid monthly using registration fees.
·       Our commitment is to ensure that our club can continue to serve the Durango community long into the future.  Providing a partial refund at this time would change this calculus.

Decisions like these are not easy. Our goal is to continue to provide your children with a great service and return them to their teams once we emerge from this pandemic. 
The credit for returning players for Fall 2020 is a follows: 

Your $60 volunteer deposit will be rolled over to the 2020/2021 season. Those who have already volunteered will be refunded accordingly. We will also offer a registration credit of $50 for the upcoming season to members if all fees are currently paid.  We are able to offer the credit and volunteer fee waiver by tapping our reserve funds built up over many years.  If anyone needs additional time to make their club registration payments, we have an existing payment plan.  For more information, please contact the club.  

Our current Spring Team Fees will be refunded (if already paid in full) with the exception of costs for indoor facilities, league games or tournaments already played, and Duke City Soccer League application fee. The club paid for the league upfront and has been told that the DCSL is not refunding any of the application fee. For those members that have not yet paid teams fees look for an email from team manager.

Registration for the 2020-21 season will open June 1st. 
We know this may be a topic that wasn’t really on your radar given the current suspension of all soccer activities due to the Coronovirus. However, there are some critically important reasons to work through this process in a normal manner so that we can ensure you of a vibrant and healthy club environment for your child to return to. 
Team formation - We want to make sure that we provide appropriate opportunities for players in the Club. In order to effectively do that, we need to know which players plan to return for the upcoming season.
Return to Play - We want to be prepared to get back on the field when our National/Local Government and our soccer governing body (CSA/NMYSA) permits us to resume activities.
