DYSA Donates Uniforms 2014

In 2014 DYSA members donated old DYSA uniforms and used gear to two great causes! Here is information on where donations went:

Soccer Aid to El Castillo

My name is Evan Schertz. I'm a junior at DHS and play on the U18 Boy's team. Last summer my Dad and I traveled to a remote village in southern Nicaragua named El Castillo. Pick up soccer is interesting there.  A pony grazed in one corner of the field; there were no nets in the goals. The ball was under-inflated and duct taped. Most kids were barefoot, others wore socks, and the lucky ones had one cleat on their dominant foot. Despite the lack of equipment they played with joy and passion.

When I got back to Durango, I realized what a privileged soccer community we have. I also realized that my old cleats and jerseys would be greatly appreciated by these kids in El Castillo.

Please join me in helping these players continue to pursue their passion for soccer.

I will send any donated soccer gear to them. Any equipment would be appreciated, but mainly cleats (of all sizes), jerseys (also of all sizes), and balls.
Thank You,

Evan Schertz

El Salvador

Late this July, my oldest son Coleman and I will be traveling to El Salvador with a small delegation of other teens and their parents (14 of us in all) as part of a service-learning project.  We will be hosted by a non-profit organization comprised of Salvadoran social workers who provide support to children and their families in El Salvador's poorest communities.  This past winter, the communities proposed several fundraising/donation projects for our delegation to choose from for our July trip.  The teens in our delegation chose to help pay for the restoration of a soccer field.  The field is at a school called San Francisco de Castaneda, but it will be available for the use of the entire surrounding community and will provide an alternative  ;activity for kids who otherwise might join a gang.  The cost of the restoration is over $10,000 and we already are halfway to that goal.  Yay! In addition to raising funds to restore the soccer fields, we are planning to take donated soccer equipment and uniforms with us to El Salvador.

This is a few of the boys in El Salvador who adopted the Durango United soccer uniforms.
The boys were so thrilled to have actual uniforms!

This is the soccer pitch that will be re-done with the money raised for this project (the grass
